My name is Sarah Kemp and I am from the western suburbs of Chicago. I graduated with a B.S. in Animal Sciences at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in May of 2019. I was never exposed to large animal agriculture until I took ANSC 103 (Working with Farm Animals). After completing that class, I was able to get a job at the university dairy farm and continued to work there from sophomore year to senior year. In this position, I was able to learn a tremendous amount about a world I had no prior exposure to and decided I wanted to stay in the dairy industry. In an effort to gain more experience in the industry I participated in undergraduate research with the Dairy Focus Lab and joined the Dairy Challenge team my senior year. My senior year, I was offered a position where I could gain a deeper understanding of management on the campus dairy farm and decided to pursue that along with a Master’s degree. I am most interested in management on farm and how all the pieces come together to form a cohesive and efficient production facility.
